Come enjoy a fall stroll through and help photograph Chattanooga's oldest continually operated public cemetery.
Note: I have received verbal permission from the cemetery office for this event. This is preservation and documentation and does not fall under the catagory of "games or amusements" for the purposes of TCA 46-1-313.
Forest Hills Cemetery represents one of Chattanooga's most diverse publicly accessible botanical spaces, as well as a fascinating study of monumental architecture throughout the city’s history. Over 44,000 people have been interred here throughout the years, and while the cemetery association’s records are now published online, only a fraction of those monuments have been fully documented for ease of location.

The primary goal of this event is to photograph and geotag as many headstones as practical.

1PM-4PM weather permitting. A post-CITO non-event event will be held at MoJo Burrito at 5:00PM to geotag and upload pictures.

Limited parking near the office building. Additional free and paid parking is available nearby.

Please bring a camera, GPS, and rubber gloves.

Clean garden sprayers, spray bottles, and rags are optional, but recommended. Numerous non-potable water spigots are available on site, as well as garbage receptacles.
Cemetery Etiquette:
- Be respectful to other visitors – If there is graveside service or mourner nearby, leave the immediate area so as not to disturb them
- Obvious litter should be removed, but vases, floral displays, flags, rock piles, etc… should not be disturbed if possible.
- If a headstone is dirty or unreadable, only use water and a damp rag or soft bristle brush to remove surface dirt and mud. Chemical cleaners, chalk, shaving cream, flour, and abrasive brushes can permanently damage older stone types such as marble, quartz, and cement.
