Geocache Description:

A quick side tracked cache

In 1860 at the height of the industrial revolution, the crumbles were identified as a source of ballastthat was needed to help build the growing rail network, a three mile branch line was laid from the crumbles quarry to join the mainline.

The Eastbourne Gas Comapny began building a new gas works in 1870, this required 40,000 tons of coal a year all of which was carried along the existing Tram line used by the Crumbles quarry to this cargo Tram station.

Later this was extended to include the Eastbourne Electric light works and the Refuse destructor Works.

The line finally closed in 1967 and the track removed soon after, In 1985 part of the route was converted to a cycle route through the Bridgemere estate.
