Geocache Description:

Geocaching is a game in which the treasures of the world are sought with the help of GPS equipment, and Latvian bridges are a key part of this chest of riches. These are strategically important structures that link two sides of a river and require ongoing oversight and maintenance. Without bridges we would be limited in time, space and opportunities. Sadly, many of our bridges are crumbling, rusting and becoming deformed. Make sure that you look at these bridges before they have collapsed! The bridge across the Ranka River along the Ogre-Viskaļi road, V0966, 10, 00 km. The bridge was built in 1964 and is 16, 85 metres long and 9, 1 metres long. During the era when Sweden ruled what is now Latvia, a nobleman called Konrad Vegesack lived on an island in the Daugava downriver from Rīga. Latvians were unfamiliar with the “f” sound that is at the start of the surname, so they named the island Vējzaķsala, similar in sound to “Vegesack.” The island was close to the right bank of the river, and so there was a road leading to it in the 19th century, with a bridge erected above the Vējzaķsala ditch that separated the island from dry land. Now the bridge crosses the Ranka River.
