Affleurement
En géologie, un affleurement est un ensemble de roches non séparées du sous-sol, étant mis à nu par un ensemble de facteurs (érosion hydraulique, glaciaire, marine ou activité humaine). L'affleurement proprement dit est le site où la roche constituant le sous-sol apparaît à la surface. Dans le paysage, il y a un affleurement quand les roches du sous-sol ne sont pas recouvertes par le sol, la végétation ou des constructions. [1]

- Saint-Michel-de-Montjoie : Important centre d'extraction du "Bleu de Vire" où un musée lui est consacré. Le Bleu de Vire a servi à la réalisation de la tombe du Soldat inconnu sous l’Arc de Triomphe à Paris, le dallage de l'aéroport de Roissy ou de la place Georges-Pompidou à Paris, le pont Alexandre III à Paris, la Basilique de Lisieux... Bande granitique
Le Massif d'Avranches forme une bande granitique assez étroite (1 à 5 km de largeur) s'étirant d'Ouest en Est sur quelque 30 km depuis les quartiers occidentaux de la ville du même nom jusqu'aux abords de Mortain, où il est recouvert par le grès armoricain." BRGM, notice de la feuille d'Avranches au 1/ 50 000, 1984. Ce granite a 570 millions d'années environ : cela veut dire qu'il s'est solidifié à cette époque en montant dans l'écorce terrestre à la faveur d'un plissement (cadomien).
Au Nord, le bassin de la Sée. Au Sud, celui de la Sélune. Toutes deux se jettent dans la baie du Mont-Saint-Michel. [3] |

Informations additionnelles
Une fois extrait, le granite est travaillé à plusieurs niveaux pour équiper les bâtiments ou orner les monuments funéraires.
Si aujourd'hui les étapes de fabrications sont industrielles, il y a quelques décennies de cela elles étaient du soin des granitiers ou plus communément appelés marbriers. On les surnommait les "picauts", ils souffraient de la silicose et utilisaient entre autres des "bouchardes". Le Musée du granite à Saint-Michel-de-Montjoie vous en dira plus.
Sillonnez donc les routes de Saint-Michel-de-Montjoie, Gathemo, du Gast et essayez de trouver les vestiges des nombreux chantiers où les marbriers travaillaient.
Vous y verrez pour sûr d'importants blocs de granite et comprendrez l'importance du granite pour la région.

Outcrop
In geology, An outcrop or rocky outcrop is a visible exposure of bedrock or ancient superficial deposits on the surface of the Earth.
Outcrops do not cover the majority of the Earth's land surface because in most places the bedrock or superficial deposits are covered by a mantle of soil and vegetation and cannot be seen or examined closely. However, in places where the overlying cover is removed through erosion or tectonic uplift, the rock may be exposed, or crop out. [1]

Additional information
Once extracted, the granite is worked following several steps until they are usable for buildings or for funerary monuments.
If today those steps are industrial, few decades ago they were handled by marblers. I recommend a visit of the Museum of the granite in Saint-Michel-de-Montjoie.
Visit also those small roads around Saint-Michel-de-Montjoie, Gathemo, Gast and try to find vestiges of workplaces where marblers used to work.
You will also find there great blocks of granite. You will then understand the importance of the granite in the region.
