There are literally thousands of War memorials around the country. Memorials were usually raised through public subscription to remember those that gave the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom of our country. 2014 was the centenary of the start of the First World War, so it was about time there was a series dedicated to War Memorials. There is an un-numbered series in Scotland called Lest we forget and another called Poppies on Parade. Any of these will happily be added to the War Memorial Series, just ask for a number. The name of this series We Shall remember them, was chosen from the very moving poem “For the Fallen” by Laurence Binyon. It is well worth searching out and reading.”
The Gallowgate War Memorial is specifically dedicated to the dead of the Green Howards. The Memorial is in the form of a Celtic Cross, and is located at the top of Frenchgate. The memorial is reached from Frenchgate by some stone steps.
The Memorial is inscribed;-
On the Cross : 1914 - 1918/ 1939 - 1945/ TO COMMEMORATE THE GALLANT DEAD/ OF THE YORKSHIRE REGIMENT/ THE GREEN HOWARDS/ WHO FOUGHT AND DIED FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR AND WHOSE NAMES/ ARE RECORDED IN A BOOK PLACED IN/ THE RICHMOND PARISH CHURCH/ AND/ THE GREEN HOWARDS WHO FELL IN OTHER/ OPERATIONS.
On the left corner stone : NORTH RUSSIA 1919/ AFGHANISTAN/ WAZIRISTAN/ PALESTINE/ MALAYA/ "LEST WE FORGET"
On the right corner stone : NORTHERN IRELAND/ FALKLANDS/ "LEST WE FORGET"
The cache is not on the memorial itself but is nearby. The memorial can be seen from the cache location.
