Sequim’s climate is perfect for growing lavender. The original lavender plants were to replace pastures that were no longer being used for the dairy industry and to help restore the agricultural base of the fertile Sequim-Dungeness Valley. Since then, lavender cultivation has grown into a strong, environmentally sound, agri-business with over 110,000 lavender plants grown each year in the area by over two dozen lavender growers and farmers. With its myriad uses beyond its fragrance – cosmetic, culinary, medicinal, craft, decorative – the magical herb has fostered dozens of small, creative ventures across the Olympic Peninsula and beyond.
Lavender Weekend in Sequim is celebrated every year on the third weekend in July. It is one of the premier events on the Olympic Peninsula.
