Geocache Description:

This cache was originally placed as part of the Visit Rainier Centennial GeoTour - 100 geocaches to celebrate 100 years of the National Park Service. The GeoTour has ended, but you can still enjoy visiting many of these special places. This bookmark lists all the GeoTour caches.

For some old-time charm on Highway 12, step into the historic Packwood Hotel and be transported back to the early 1900s. The hotel was build in 1912, and was the first business building in Packwood. It's furnished with antiques and other relics of a bygone era, and rumor has it that Teddy Roosevelt stayed here back in the day. (He apparently stayed everywhere.)

The cache: This is a straightforward, two-stage multi. Posted coordinates are for the front of the hotel, where all the answers can be gathered.

  1. At the top of the hotel, there is a sign with a four-digit number. The third number is A.
  2. How many letters are in the second word of the sign at the top of the hotel? Let that be B.
  3. Take the second number from that sign and subtract the last number. That equals C.
  4. There are two carved statues by the front door. What type of animal is on the right side? Number of letters in its name is D.
  5. That same animal is holding a sign that has a word. Number of letters in that word equals E.
  6. How many fingers is the other figure holding up? Let that be F.

Final: N 46° 36.ABC W 121° 40.DEF

Checksum (all digits): North 35, West 20

2016 was the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service, and to celebrate, Visit Rainier and WSGA hosted the Visit Rainier Centennial GeoTour - 100 caches placed in and around Mount Rainier National Park. The geocaches highlighted the rich history, scenic wonders, quaint communities, and hidden gems of the Rainier region. Participants received geocoin and pathtag prizes for finding all the caches.
