Sampson Air Force Base covered an initial area of 2600 acres. It's original construction was authorized in May of 1942 to serve as a Naval training station, and a mere 270 days after groundbreaking, it welcomed it's first recruits, remaining active until 1945. From 1946 to 1949, the land served as a 2 year college for veterans that had returned from war. Later, from 1950-56, it served as an Air Force training center during the Korean War. It was named after Rear Admiral William Thomas Sampson from nearby Palmyra NY. He was a well respected member of the Navy who served from 1857-1902 and had a part in both The Civil War & The Spanish-American War. Besides being honored with his name on this park; 4 naval destroyers, a building at the US Naval Academy, a service medal, and numerous schools have all been named after him as well.
This 12 stage multi cache will follow the route established by the Sampson State Park Military History Trail. At each waypoint you will find 2 small sign posts. One will tell you the stop number you are at and give you a number you can call for more information on the area you are currently occupying. There are 2 other trails of this type in the park as well, one about the nature surrounding the park and one about Seneca Lake, the park's home. Both are highly educational and recommended if you have the time. On this particular trail, you will also come across a 2nd post bearing a picture from life on the military base and a short informational sentence or two about where you would have been standing if your were suddenly whisked back in time to when this was an active area. These will be your main points of interest and where you gather your information from. The waypoints are laid out in the order they appear on the park's official map. It may not be the best way to approach things however, as it can be laid out in a nice little loop should you pick the right path... Most of this cache can be done from the comfort of your bicycle or car but it does require two short walks. One to Waypoint 4, and a short jaunt to the final. It should be noted that a few of these waypoints lie within regulated hunting areas so if you find yourself in the park during those seasons please display extra caution or save the cache until a safer time of year.
Once you have all the necessary information, use the following equations to calculate the final. An old naval style ammo can. There is a FTF card game or you choice of lots of fine swag to the first to find. PLEASE DO NOT DESCRIBE THE FINAL LOCATION IN YOUR LOG! IT RUINS THE MULTI FOR ANYONE WHO HAPPENS TO NOTICE IT BEFORE COMPLETING THE STAGES!

As of 12/30/2021, this cache has been adopted by Sherminator18. My caching friend SKAJAKS aka JAKSolantern unexpectedly passed away in October 2021. JAKS and I, along with JAKS' son, SpadeNya, my husband, McDoogins, and our geopups Zelda and Rogue, had many fun adventures together over the years. JAKS will be missed and I will be keeping some of his caches alive in his memory.
