The Middle Sea Embezzler Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

barefootjeff: I went back to the waterhole this afternoon to see if I could find somewhere else for the Bushranger to tether Plodfoot's horse where the Muggledom Marauders might be less likely to spot it, but no joy. One half of the waterhole is too exposed and the other half is covered by a dense mat of reeds with deep thickets of ferns around the bank. So for now Rob Deeppocket is going to get away with his thousand quid but maybe, just maybe, there might come another chance to nab him.

For the record, the cache itself, which was unmuggled, has been retrieved, as has the remaining fishing line from the tethers.

Geocache Description:

The cache isn't at the listed coordinates but from there you'll have a clear view of the path you need to take.

"Have you seen today's paper?" Constable Cacher asked, knocking on Sheriff Plodfoot's door. "It's not good."

"Show me."

George Cacher handed it to him.

Plodfoot scratched his head. "Am I baffled, Geo?"

"Um."

"Come on, let's at least go talk to some of my informants."

Plodfoot grabbed his hat, strode out of the gaol house and mounted his...

"Cacher, where's my horse?"

"I dunno, sir. It was here earlier, I'm sure."

"Of course it was, I rode it to work this morning and parked it right here."

"Excuse me," the old woman sitting on the stoop said. "Are you the sheriff?"

Plodfoot looked down, making sure he hadn't lost his badge as well as his horse. "Yes, for now at least."

"It's just that there was this tall fella in a black hat, said he was borrowing your horse for a while. Said it had something to do with that bank robber chap."

"Tall? Black hat?" Plodfoot asked, pointing to the Wanted Dead or Alive poster on the noticeboard. "Not him?"

"Yes, that's him, that Bushranger bloke."

Plodfoot moaned, wondering what the press would make of this latest development.

"He said he'll leave your horse up by the waterhole and in return for letting him use it he'll tell you where the stolen money is."

"Waterhole? Where?"

"The directions are in today's Comet."

Plodfoot scanned through the paper again, scratching his head. "I don't see any directions."

The woman sighed. "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it -"

"Drink?"

"I was going to say drown, but no matter. It's not the words, Sheriff, it's what's in between that counts."

Plodfoot moaned again.

"Come ma," the young man stepping towards them said. "The sheriff's a busy man and can't stand around gas-bagging with you all day."

The woman stood. "You'll figure it out, Sheriff, I'm sure."

Plodfoot went to tip his hat to her, but suddenly his eyes lit up. "Come ma," he whispered. "It's what's in between that counts. Of course!"

Footnote: There are some interesting caves between the waypoint and GZ. I wanted to hide the cache in one of them but the honeycombing wasn't deep enough to put it out of sight and there's evidence of recent muggle visits, so I opted for somewhere more appropriate.

Congratulations to lance91, the first to find the stolen loot (and Plodfoot's horse)!
