Rising between Fljótsdalshérað and Vopnafjörður, the 655 m. high pass of Hellisheiði provides a spectacular view for travellers. The road is quite steep and windy, but it is usually passable for all vehicles during summer. The pass is usually closed in winter.
Hellisheiði is the shortest connection between Egilsstaðir and Vopnafjörður.
By the way: Hellisheiði Eystri should not be confused with the lava plateau east of Reykjavík.
