Clay Creek Falls is one of Dahlonega's beautiful treasures that is accessible for view only by car!! That's right you don't have to get out of your car to see this great waterfall. If you do decide to get out and view this waterfall from the road right of way there is a pull off about 50 yards south of the waterfall.
The water of Clay Creek begins it journey about five miles north as a spring in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia's Blue Ridge Geologic Province. That spring of water becomes larger in volume as other springs and rain runoff areas combine. As you drive Clay Creek falls road from either direction you will notice the creek is only about 10 feet wide. However, at the falls you will notice the creek is much wider due to the erosion resistant exposed metamorphic rock which allows the water to spread out across the width of the rock. Then once, it coalesces at the bottom of the falls the creek regains its previous width due to the top sediment being eroded into a deeper channel with banks. From here the water takes quite a journey before it ends up in a much larger body of water.
The water's path and where it ends up is contingent upon the lay of land and how it funnels the water to a lower point. That is called a watershed. Georgia has 52 watersheds. Those 52 watersheds in Georgia form 14 River Basins. Both are illustrated below.
