While you are here you are also very close to what was once called Billy Button Creek (that would be that drain you are standing next to!)
It was named after the flowers that grew along its banks.
This small drain was once the sewerage outfall from all of Footscray's industrial area. Aren't you glad things have changed?
A little further down the path was the Footscray Powder Magazine.
It was build in 1858 at the height of Victoria's gold rush to store gunpowder for the mining and quarrying industries.
It was an idea location as the explosives were brought in by boat, then tram to this location.

The magazine was a heavy bluestone building with solid buttresses, able to hold up to 180 tones of explosives.
Soon after its completion local residents started to agitate for it to be moved.
The magazine was finally closed in 1878 (20 years later) and the explosives relocated upstream to the Saltwater River Powder Magazine in Maribyrnong. This was later know as the Colonial Ammunition Factory. Stuff all is left of the magazine structure today.
