The Puzzle
North Wales has a rich maritime history. The Menai Straits are one of just a handful of Marine Nature Reserves in the UK. The Straits are dangerous waters due to the strong currents that rip through them. Some of the most dangerous waters are the Swellies that boil and have many whirlpools in them for much of the tidal cycle. Many ships have been wrecked in them, the most famous of which is the HMS Conway. The HMS Conway was wrecked on the Swellies on 14th April 1953. Part of the wreck still exists on the seabed and many divers dive on her every year. The HMS Conway served as a training ship through WWII and part of that training will have taken place in her communication room where operators of the Morse key would have been sending and receiving messages all day.
