Geocache Description:

Part of a series taking you to some of our favourite places to spend time in Toronto.

Dufferin/St Clair Library is located at 1625 Dufferin Street.

The library features a KidsStop Early Learning Centre, which is a literacy-rich, tactile learning area for children aged five and under.  They are designed for infants and thier caregivers to learn and play together.  All KidsStops in Toronto Public Library have a unique theme, the one at Dufferin/St Clair has reproductions of the "Dragon" from Michael Martchenko's illustrations in the book "The Paper Bag Princess" by Robert Munsch.

Inside the branch there are murals painted by noted Canadian oil painter George Agnew Reid and two of his students; Doris McCarthy and Lorna Clair.  They were done sometime between 1925 and 1932.  Historical art buffs may be interested to know that Reid was the principal of the Central Ontario School of Art and Design (which was later renamed as the Ontario College of Art and Design) from 1912 to 1918.  His works can be found at Toronto's Old City Hall and in the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa.  McCarthy was also a well-known artist and received the Order of Ontario and the Order of Canada.  Her works are featured in the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Wynick/Tuck Gallery and the "Doris McCarthy Gallery" at the University of Toronto Scarborough campus.

The murals at the Dufferin/St Clair Library were painted over and hidden from the public eye sometime in the 1960s and were only restored in 2004 and 2007 as a result of the efforts of local residents.

Staff at the branch are aware of the cache and look forward to your hunting stories.
