Askersund är min "hemstad" i Sverige, där jag bodde mina första 15 år efter flytten från USA. Askersund är både en kommun och en stad i regionen Örebro, med en befolkningsmängd i tätorten på 3 887 invånare (2010). Staden fick sina stadsprivilegier 1643, men "Eskersund" nämns i historieböckerna redan på 1300-talet. En mycket gammal stad alltså. Den 6 juni 1776, endast en månad innan USA skulle deklarera sin självständighet, härjade en brand i trästaden Askersund och samma kväll var nästan hela staden nedbränd. Endast 8-9 hus överlevde branden. Du kommer att besöka några av dem under din vistelse i Hembygdsgården i Askersunds stadspark. Den nya staden som byggdes upp 10 år senare "tack vare statshjälp och många frivilliga offergåvor" är i stort sett samma stad som du besöker idag.
Nu är det dax för en härlig promenad runt denna underbara stad. Du utgår från kyrkan, där du även kan parkera om du kommit med bil. Sedan går du över hamnområdet ner till Varmbadhuset. Sedan fortsätter du genom ett kvarter med några av de “nya” trähusen från 1700-talet till torget, där det finns kaféer och butiker för alla, samt flera fina träkåkar. Efter vistelsen i stadskärnan går du vidare mot den gamla tågstationen, det finns mycket intressant att läsa här. På väg upp till Hembygdsgården går du med fördel en underbar strandpromenad vid Alsen. Lycka till!

English: This letterbox shows you around my old hometown of Askersund. After you’ve solved the letterbox and are at the final coords, then you will be about 20 meters or so from where I used to live. A very nostalgic place for me. Enjoy!
Askersund is my “hometown” in Sweden, having lived here my first 15 yrs after moving from USA. Askersund is both a municipality and a city in the region of Örebro, with a population of 3,887 (2010). The city received its charter in 1643, however “Eskersund" is mentioned in history books as early as the 1300’s. A very old city indeed. On June 6, 1776, only a month before the United States would declare its independence, a fire ravaged this old wooden town and that the same evening most of the city had burnt to the ground. Only 8-9 houses survived the fire, some of which you will visit during your stay at the “Old Town” park, Hembygdsgården. The new town was built up 10 years later "thanks to government assistance and many voluntary offerings" and is almost the same city that you visit today.
Now it's time for a lovely walk around this wonderful city. You'll start at the church, where you also can park if you arrived by car. Then walk over the harbor area down to the hot bath house. Proceed through a neighborhood of "newer” wooden buildings from the 1700's to the town square, where there are cafes and shops. And then continue your walk by some more fine wooden buildings. After visiting in the downtown area, you'll continue towards the old train station, where there is some very interesting reading. On yourway up to the "old town", you'll enjoy a wonderful promenade by Alsen. Good luck!
