The purpose of this Wherigo cartridge and cache is to give geocachers a virtual guide to the many sights of the Athens / Piraeus area, and also a cache to find in the end! It contains 20 sights, including the major tourist attractions, but also some less-known sights that you may find interesting. The cartridge contains a short description for each attraction.
For your convenience, here is a list of the sights contained in the cartridge:
- Archaeological Museum
- Neoclassical Trilogy
- Panathenaic Stadium
- Acropolis Museum
- Acropolis
- Lycabettus
- Benaki Museum
- Byzantine Museum
- War Museum
- Odeon of Herodes Atticus
- Monastiraki Flea Market
- Numismatic Museum
- Philopappos Monument
- Tower of the Winds
- Monument of Lysicrates
- Parliament
- National (Royal) Gardens
- Electric Railways Museum (Piraeus)
- Hellenic Maritime Museum (Piraeus)
- Battleship George Averof (Piraeus)
You only have to visit ten (10) of the sights included in the cartridge, in order to unlock the final stage of the physical cache. These can be visited in any order, or over the course of several days, saving your progress. This can easily be achieved by visiting the most popular tourist sights and their whereabouts, so although I have included some of my personal favorites, I am by no means forcing them upon geocachers.
For most of the locations (such as museums) you only have to go up to the location entrance in order to claim it as visited. Also, the tolerances are pretty high -- getting to within 20 meters of most locations will mark them as visited. For some open-air locations, e.g. the Acropolis, you will have to actually go inside the site -- tickets will be required for some of them. Once inside, just turn on your GPSr / smartphone to mark it as visited. However it is easy to complete the cartridge without visiting any sights requiring a ticket purchase.
As you visit the sights, they will disappear from the listing. Also, once you have visited the required number of locations, the rest of them will disappear and will be replaced by the final location containing the cache. It is located in yet another minor attraction (a park), within walking distance of the Victoria metro station, and should be fairly easy to find.
