We hope that you enjoy this series, and are able to discover many of the places
that make the area unique and special.

For nearly 60 years, welcoming the buzzards back to Hinckley each spring as been an annual tradition.

The story begins in the 1950's.
Two Cleveland Metropolitan Park System rangers told of the
vernal return of the turkey vulture every year on March 15th.

In February of 1957, a journalist from the Cleveland Press published a story about the phenomenon.
A month later on March 15th, Hinckley residents were unprepared for the onslaught of
ornithologists, naturalists, thousands of spectators, and the media.
All had come to see if the buzzards would arrive as predicted.

The crowd waited and waited, but nothing happened.
Finally, at about 2:00, the first of the birds was spotted, and soon the sky was filled with buzzards.
The rest, as they say, is history.

The following year, the Park District and the townspeople were ready for the barrage of visitors.
Buzzard Day continues to be celebrated on March 15th,
and the following Sunday is designated Buzzard Sunday.

Over the years, the festival has grown to include a pancake breakfast that is held at the local elementary school, an arts and crafts fair, contests, displays, and demonstrations, and other family-friendly activities.

This geocache complies with the guidelines for geocache placement set forth by the Cleveland MetroParks.
