Hathersage railway station serves the village of Hathersage in the Derbyshire Peak District, in England.
It was opened in 1894 on the Midland Railway's Dore and Chinley line (now the Hope Valley Line). The original buildings were of timber and have disappeared with the platforms being rebuilt in masonry.
The villagers' initial reaction to proposals to build the railway may have been unenthusiastic. They had already had an unfavourable experience of the 'iron horse' in the form of a traction engine in 1882, which, drawing two heavy carts, had made the roads almost impassable, killing a boy and overturning a mail cart. In addition a private carriage collided with it, killing one of the occupants.
Hathersage station has 2 platforms, a station car park, no toilets and is unstaffed. There are benches and shelters on both platforms and it is a popular location for trainspotters due to its scenic location and regular freight services passing through. There are also numerous picturesque walks from the railway station, including through the woods to Grindleford Station and its cafe, and up to the renowned Stanage Edge.
There are lots of things to do in Hathersage, the village in which Little John is said to be buried. There are several pubs, three churches, an open air swimming pool, several shops and restaurants and lots of great walks.
