Spectacular Views Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Cache Sleuth: I recently had to remove another cache I had in the park due to searchers having multiple interactions with poisonous snakes at the hiding place. Now, I have been contacted by another cacher who encountered a copperhead while looking for this hide in just the last week. I don't want to be responsible for anyone being bitten while looking for the caches in Carnifex, so I have decided to take down all of my hides in the park. I apologize for having to take this step and thanks to everyone who has found this cache over the years.

Geocache Description:

A family-friendly cache hidden along Patterson Trail, not far from some spectacular overlooks, in historic Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park, south of Summersville, West Virginia.

For more details on the history, attractions and facilities of this fine state park, please visit their official web site: CLICK HERE.

To get the the park from U.S. 19, go west on State Route 129 for about 5 miles. Then turn left onto Carnifex Ferry Road. From there it is one mile to the park. There are several parking areas, but the one closest to the cache is across the road from the ball field. Walk across the field toward home plate and the benches, and you will find the trail going back into the woods. This connector trail will take you to Patterson Trail, the overlooks, and the cache hiding place. Just follow your GPS. Be sure to bring your camera because there are some great views from the overlooks of the Gauley River far below. If you come in the fall when nearby Summersville Lake is being lowered to winter pool, you may get the chance to watch whitewater rafters and kayakers making their way down the river.

The cache is in a 2.5 cup snap lock type container with an orange West Virginia State Parks "Official Geocache" sticker. Initial contents are: a toy car, visor clip, 2 marbles, a seashell, mini ball, eraser, carabiner clip, toy soldier, plastic pin, play money, keyring, 2 foreign coins, and a log book with pen.

SPECIAL NOTE: The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources discourages off-trail hiking in state parks as it negatively impacts the environment. This cache is hidden no more than 50 feet off the trail, so please refrain from taking shortcuts or engaging in unnecessary bushwhacking during your search.
