The majestic Corn Rose grows in abundance along this river trail. It is a hardy variety often growing from 6 to 8 feet tall. It has a fruit favoured by many creatures including raccoons, geese, ducks, cows and even humans. Cows especially love the yellow fruit and tall green stalks. In early fall the robust Corn Rose is cut down for bovine fodder. Cows find the plant succulent and they dine on this gourmet meal by candle light in the dark recesses of their barns all winter. This practise however has seldom been witnessed but I believe it to be true. By the end of the winter the Corn Rose is all consumed and the candles are gone. Though a hardy plant, the Corn Rose is threatened here by flooding, erosion, climate change and hungry cows.
