The Martin Luther Kirche is located in the Shieldfield area of Newcastle upon Tyne and is one of five German Churches across the German parish district of Scotland and North East England; this district being one of seven covering the UK. The German speaking congregations who gather here are affiliated to the Protestant Church of Germany (Evangelische Kirche Deutschland).
The other four churches in this parish district meet at Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Middlesbrough.
The parish congregation dates back to 1947 providing church services to post World War II prisoners-of-war. The church is a reformed one which follows Presbyterian traditions though the members and ministers come from various denominations, including Reformed, Lutheran, Catholic and United. Services are provided in German and the church welcomes all language abilities.
