The thirteenth century church of St Bartholomew, Kirkwhelpington is an unusual shape with a squat tower and long nave and chancel which were altered in the fifteenth century and then again in 1896. Excavations have shown that at one time it had aisles and transepts. It was during his incumbency here that the distinguished antiquary John Hodgson wrote his History of Northumberland. The churchyard has many interesting gravestones and is the burial place of Sir Charles Parsons, inventor of the steam turbine, and his wife, Lady Katharine.
