Istead Rise is a village that forms part of the district of Gravesham. Its population (according to Wiki in 2016) is >3,400. The village includes St Barnabas Church (founded in 1957), a primary school and a small parade of shops. The village sign is located near to the shops, where you can park for a closer look.
The sign reflects Istead Rise's history as a faming community, situated along the North Down's Way. During the 1860s, several pig farms operated in the area, including those on the site of the current school and along Downs Road. Orchards once grew where the Community Centre fields now lie and Flower Hill Way was once the site of a flower farm. The shops are located on what was once known as Frog Island (the name is still used by the local Morris dancing group). The sign incorporates pigs, apples, flowers and the church into its design.
