Geocache Description:

Part one: The story of the Angel's Hand

In the early 1900's, Love F Seymour placed a statue in the Marion Cemetery in honor of her grandparents Eli and Margaret Green. It was the largest statue in the cemetery. The granite statue was a life size sculpture of an angel standing atop of a grand pedestal with the names of her grandparents and aunt carved upon it.

The stone monument itself was not out of the ordinary, in fact you can find some similar to it throughout the cemetery. What was unusual was the presence people felt standing near the cold stone figure. The statue was rather eerie by day, casting a cold solemn stare, frozen in a moment of terrible grief and pain. By night it was said that bloody tears would run down the sides of it's face. The shadows cast by the moonlight were foreboding and ominous, as if her arms could reach out and grab you.

It didn't take long for rumors to spread throughout the town and surrounding countryside. They said that the statue was haunted by the spirit of Helen Green, who at age 16 died of mysterious causes. The statue's eyes would cry blood at midnight and anyone who should catch sight of her gaze would be struck blind. Any pregnant woman who passed by her shadow would miscarry. If you sat by her feet on a moonlit night, she would reach out and drag that person kicking and screaming off to the afterlife. They also said that dark spirits would rise from their graves and gather around the statue on certain nights.

People began visiting the cemetery just to see the statue, and it was then that the local fraternity from the Marion Collegiate Institute decided to make the statue of grief part of their initiation rites. Graveyard sitting, where candidates for membership had to spend the night crouched down beneath the statue with their backs to Helen Green's grave became popular.

One dark night, two fraternity members,  Charles Tuttle and Zebulon Fireside accompanied a new hopeful to the cemetery and watched while he took his place underneath the creepy statue. The air was still and cold in the autumn night, not a sound could be heard in the dark cemetery. Then a gentle breeze picked up, rustling dry leaves across the tomb stones. The clouds that had obscured the fullness of the moon, now parted and gave way to an eerie glow filling the grave yard with light and shadow. A chill crept up the boy's spines and they thought they saw dark shadows gather around the young boy who was shaking in fear beneath the front of the statue.

What had been a funny initiation rite suddenly took on an air of danger. Charles Tuttle stepped forward in alarm to call out to the young lad. As he did, the statue above the boy stirred ominously. The two fraternity brothers froze in shock as the mournful head turned toward the new candidate. They saw the wet gleam of tears stream down the angels face as she reached out toward the cowering boy.

With shouts of alarm, the fraternity brothers ran forward to rescue the new initiate. But it was too late. The initiate gave one horrified yell, and then his body disappeared into the embrace of the dark angel. The fraternity brothers skidded to a halt as the statue slowly turned it's bloody gaze upon them. With gasps of terror, the boys fled from the cemetery before the statue could grab them too. Hearing the screams, a night watchman hurried to the Green family plot. To his horror, he discovered the body of a young man lying at the foot of the statue. The young man had apparently died of fright. The end of his scarf caught in the angels hand.

The disruption caused by the death grew so acute that the Marion Collegiate Institute was closed down. Soon after, Zebulon Fireside returned to the site of the grizzly scene, cut off the angel's hand and buried it outside the cemetery to prevent anyone else from suffering the same fate. However his soul never recovered from the tragic incident and a few years later wandered off never to be seen again.

Part two: To Find The Cache

The posted coordinates take you to a central place in the "old" part of the cemetery. There are no coordinates for each of the three statues you need to find. Instead begin looking around this small cemetery (within 200-400' away) and find each of the angel statues. One by one, find the three angels in which ever order you chose. The pictures on the page will help, but if you don't have those pictures, look for familiar names from the story above. Near each angel you'll gather pieces of information, off of tomb stones, grave markers or the statues themselves, for the coordinates to the final location of the cache. Please don't disturb any of the graves in the cemetery. The only physical container is the geocache located just outside the graveyard.
