Vrbické pleso je ľadovcové pleso a najväčšie prirodzené jazero v Nízkych Tatrách.
Od roku 1975 je národnou prírodnou pamiatkou a platí preň najvyšší, piaty stupeň ochrany.
Leží v hornej západnej časti Demänovskej Doliny. Zaberá plochu 0,69 ha, má maximálnu hĺbku 8 m, dĺžku 115 m a šírku 62 m. Chránené územie má ochranné pásmo o výmere 24,71 ha. Je to morénové jazero, ktoré vzniklo v období štvrtohôr po ústupe ľadovca zo severných svahov Chopka a Derešov. Svojím vznikom sa viac podobá plesám vo Vysokých Tatrách. Z jazera vyteká Otupnianka a pre zabezpečenie stálej výšky hladiny, boli upravené hrádze.

Vrbické ice lake is the biggest ice lake in Nízke Tatry. It has been established as a national natural sight in 1975 and is placed under the highest (5th) level of natural protection.
It lays in the upper western part of Demänovská dolina. It covers the area of 0.69 ha, has the deepest point of 8m, length of 115m and width of 62m. It’s protected area covers 24.71ha around the lake. It has moranial origin and was created in Quartenary Period after the retreat of the glacier from the northern slopes of Chopok and Derešov. It’s origin is quite similiar to those of the ice lakes in Vysoké Tatry. Otupianka stream originates in this ice lake and weirs were built to keep the lake’s level even.
Okolie Vrbického plesa je dobre sprístupnené turistickými chodníkmi. V tomto čase prebieha príprava rozsiahleho projektu záchrany Vrbického plesa, ktorý má zabrániť jeho zmenšovaniu. Jeho plocha v posledných dvoch desaťročiach rapídne zarástla porastom pálky, rastlinou, ktorá sa vyskytuje vo výrazne nižších polohách.
The area around the lake is easily accessible by tourist trails. At this moment a project is being prepared with the goal of saving the lake and stop it’s reduction.
It’s also been continuously overgrown by a weed that grows in significantly lower altitude.
Pri plese si môžte oddýchnuť na lavičkách v tichu lesa a pokochať sa výhľadmi na okolité hrebene Nízkych Tatier. Pod Chopok by sa mohli podľa vzoru svojho brata Štrbského plesa vrátiť aj malé loďky v obmedzenom počte, ktoré sa využívali na člnkovanie od 60. tych rokov minulého storočia. Vrbické pleso je východiskovým bodom viacerých turistických trás, výstupov na vrcholy a zaujímavé výlety.

Tourists can relax on the benches built in the quiet of the woods around the lake and feast their eyes on the crests of Nízke Tatry. According to the example of it’s brother Štrbské ice lake, small boats used for sailing since the 60s could return under Chopok in reduced number. Vrbnické ice lake is a starting point of many tourist trails, ascents and interesting trips.
