SNOWDON SUMMIT
Our event smiley will be attainable just by stopping by to say hello below the mountain at Llanberis (hence the 1/1 dificulty/terrain rating!). For the more adventurous the summit is achievable by train, or for the well prepared a hike or scramble up the mountain to the summit.
The mountain railway books up very fast, especially during summer months, so be sure to prebook your ticket.
There are several recognised routes to Snowdon Summit, some more challenging than others. The easiest walk (also the longest and busiest!) is following the Llanberis path. The round trip from and back to your starting point from Victoria Terrace (just up the road from the Snowdon Mountain Railway Station) will be about 9 miles, and will take around 6 hours to complete. The path offers fantastic views - on a clear day you can see as far as Anglesey over the Menai Straits.
There is a bus service that opens up many more possibilities. Why not hike up one path and come down another? The buses shuttle around the base of Snowdon connecting all 6 main footpaths and the surrounding villages.

For those not going to the summit of Snowdon, there is the opportunity to have a picnic on the grassy shores of Lake Padarn at the event location, have some geo-chat and play a few games. Nearby is a children’s playground and boats are available for hire. Dogs are allowed on the grassy shore both on and off their leads. The nearby Electric Mountain Visitor centre has toilets, a café, shop as well as a webcam (see below). For those wanting to explore in and around Llanberis there are lots of places to visit.
WEBCAM GEOCACHE
GCQ7C0 Mole Says Stick Em Up 2 (N 53° 07.126 W 004° 07.282) The only webcam geocache remaining in Wales and one of only twelve in the UK is at the Electric Mountain visitors centre. See the webcam cache page for details of group photographs that are being arranged during this event.
WALKS
There are walks for everyone in and around Llanberis. Padarn Country Park offers many on the shores of Lake Padarn. The walk around the lake takes 2-3 hours whilst for the more energetic there is the excellent 4 mile walk through the woods up to the slate viewpoint with a steep descent down the incline back to Llanberis.
EARTHCACHES
As well as the Snowdon Summit EarthCache there are three others that can be reach on walks from Llanberis.
GC69N39 - VIVIAN DYKE near the Slate Museum takes you though the short railway tunnel to the impressive Vivian Quarry with its Diving centre and rock climbing.
GC6A518 - Y CEILIOG MAWR – FAULT takes you to visit an Igneous Intrusion within the Dinorwig Quarries. It is high up the hill and to the south east across Llyn Peris.
GC2NG5W - Ceunant Mawr Waterfall visits a waterfall (known as Llanberis Falls) a few hundred metres upriver from the town centre of Llanberis. The falls are probably seen by more people on the Snowdon Mountain Railway as it crosses the viaduct than by walkers.
