The First Car Palace
This in 1913 completed car palace is today known as Hankkijan talo. It was designed by a finnish architect Jarl Eklund and it was built for car dealer Sergei Nikolajeff.
Originally in the first floor of this four storey building there were office spaces. In the underground spaces there was a garage and storage rooms but the large car showroom for hundred cars was situated in the second floor. A driving ramp led to the second floor where the cars were lifted further by a car elevator. On the fourth floor there was an automobile repair shop. In the attic there were two tennis courts and an american bowling alley.
In 1918 the building was sold to become the headquarters of Hankkija, which is an agribusiness wholesale cooperative. In 1973 the building was sold to Alko and it is nowadays owned by Alko´s pension trust. Alko is a government-owned alcoholic beverage retailing monopoly in Finland.
Ensimmäinen autopalatsi
Jarl Eklundin vuonna 1913 valmistunut Kampin autopalatsi tunnetaan nykyään Hankkijan talona. Talon rakennutti autokauppias Sergei Nikolajeff.
Nelikerroksisen rakennuksen katutasossa oli alun perin konttori- ja edustustiloja. Kellarissa oli autotalleja, varasto- ja huoltotiloja, mutta varsinaiset autojen näyttelytilat oli sijoitettu kerroksiin. Rakennuksen toiseen kerrokseen johti ajoramppi, jonka päästä autot nostettiin muihin kerroksiin autohissillä. Kolmannen kerroksen näyttelyhalliin mahtui jopa sata autoa. Neljänteen kerrokseen oli sijoitettu korjaamotilat. Talon ullakolla oli kaksi tennishallia ja avoin amerikkalainen keilarata.
Vuonna 1918 rakennus myytiin keskusosuusliike Hankkijalle pääkonttoriksi. Vuonna 1973 rakennus siirtyi Alkolle ja nykyisin sen omistaa Alkon eläkesäätiö.
