Os faróis são muito importantes para os marinheiros e devido à sua primordial importância para a navegação (segurança e orientação).
O Farol de Ponta Garça localiza-se no lugar do Cinzeiro, freguesia de Ponta Garça, na costa sul da ilha de São Miguel, Açores. O farol foi construído em 1957 e está instalado no topo de uma torre cilíndrica branca com 14 metros de altura, tendo um edifício anexo. A luz, que tem o número nacional 606 e o número internacional D-2642, está situada a 101 m acima do nível médio do mar e está equipada com uma ótica dióptrica fixa com um tambor de 500 mm de distância focal dotado de sectores brancos e vermelhos. A iluminação é feita com lâmpadas de halogéneo de 50 w operando a uma tensão de 12 v. O alcance da luz vermelha é de 13 e o da luz branca é de 16 milhas náuticas. Este farol é guarnecido por um faroleiro e serve de guia aos navegantes.

Complexo composto por um farol, habitação do faroleiro e respetivos anexos. Torre cilíndrica de planta circular e corpo rebocado e pintado, com 14 metros de altura e oito falsos contrafortes dispostos radialmente, estreitando na zona superior, onde existe varandim circular, com guarda em ferro, formada por anéis sobrepostos, pintada de vermelho; no topo dispõem-se cúpula envidraçada com cobertura metálica igualmente pintada de vermelho, coroada por catavento. A torre possui quatro registos de vãos, o inferior rasgado por portal de verga reta e moldura bastante saliente, os dois intermédios por frestas e o último por janela de sacada, de guarda plena, a partir da qual se desenvolve escada de ferro de acesso à cúpula; a janela é ladeada por dois óculos circulares. O acesso à torre do farol faz-se pelo edifício de apoio, de planta retangular e cobertura de laje, de uma água, ligeiramente inclinada criando pala frontal. Fachada principal rebocada e pintada de bege, com cunhais e embasamento em cantaria, com as juntas pintadas de branco, rasgada por porta de verga reta ladeada por dois vãos com tijolo de vidro, de molduras comuns, e encimado por dois grupos de cinco vãos quadrangulares geminados. Fachadas laterais em cantaria com as juntas pintadas de branco. A habitação do faroleiro tem planta retangular, de massa simples e cobertura homogénea em telhado de quatro águas. Fachadas revestidas a placas de cantaria, percorridas por embasamento em cantaria, com as juntas pintadas de branco e terminadas em cornija avançada. A fachada principal, virada a E., é rasgada por porta de verga reta ladeada por dois grupos de vãos baixos interligados pelo peitoril e moldura superior, possuindo seis do lado esquerdo e quatro no direito. Fachadas laterais rasgadas por janela de peitoril central com moldura superior e inferior e a posterior por três semelhantes, tendo adossado alpendre constituído por pilares e vigas de betão armado.

PONTA GARÇA LIGHTHOUSE
The Ponta Garça Lighthouse is located in place of the ashtray, parish of Ponta Garça, on the south coast of the island of São Miguel, Azores. The lighthouse was built in 1957 and is installed on top of a white cylindrical tower with 14 meters high, with an annex building. The light, which has the 606 national number and international number D-2642, is situated 101 m above the sea level and is equipped with a fixed optical diopter drum with a 500 mm focal distance provided with white and red sectors . The lighting is done with halogen bulbs of 50 W operating at a voltage of 12V. The range of the red light is 13 and white light is 16 nautical miles. This lighthouse is manned by a lighthouse keeper and serves as a guide to seamen.
DESCRIPTION OF THE LIGHTHOUSE
Complex consisting of a lighthouse , the lighthouse keeper's cottage and its annexes . Circular cylindrical tower plant and plastered and painted body, 14 feet high and eight false buttresses arranged radially narrowing in the upper zone , where there is circular balcony with iron guard , formed by overlapping rings , painted red , at the top it also has a glazed dome with a painted red metal roof , crowned by weathervane. The tower has four records spans, torn by lower portal and quite straight spar projecting frame , the two middle crevices and the last for , full guard, bay window from which develops iron stair access to the dome , the window is flanked by two circular glasses. The access to the lighthouse tower is through the support building , rectangular in plan and cover slab of a water, creating a gently sloping front flap . the main facade plastered and painted beige, with cornerstones and foundations in stone , painted with white knuckles , ripped straight for door lintel flanked by two bays with glass brick , common moldings , and surmounted by two groups of five quadrangular openings twinned . Side walls masonry with painted white knuckles . The lighthouse keeper's cottage has rectangular plan , single mass and homogeneous coverage hipped roof . Facades with coated plates ashlar masonry covered by foundation , together with the painted white and finished in Advanced cornice. The main facade , facing E. , is torn by a straight lintel door flanked by two groups of interconnected low spans the sill and top frame , having six left and four on the right . Lateral facades torn by central window sill with upper and lower rear frame and three similar, with addorsed porch consisting of pillars and beams of reinforced concrete .
