The church was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott (better known for working on Liverpool Cathedral, Waterloo Bridge and Battersea Power Station). Its website describes the church as a 'monolithic brown brick structure' with 'the same Gothic vertical emphasis used by him in the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral'.
Our Lady was constructed on the site of a former horse-drawn tram depot which closed in 1901. The former tram manager's house became the presbytery. Construction cost £6,436 and was paid for by the family of Sarah and Alfred Tolhurst in their memory. The austere interior is little altered and retains many original furnishings by Scott.
The cache can be found directly opposite the church near the seat. Stealth needed as this is a busy main road. Prize for FTF.
Congratulations to Kentishlass and Crosspath for FTF
