The exact date of the church's construction is unknown but dates back to the 14th century. Evidence of the original Anglo Saxon church that existed on the site can be found in the south west corner. Part of the church's interior dates back to the 13th century. Even material of Roman age can be found in the walls. The church is Grade I listed.
A tower was constructed in 1180 without foundations which fell down in 1628. The current tower was constructed in 1717 and has a peel of eight bells.
The church is decorated in gothic style and is a striking contrast to its modern and imposing neighbour, Our Lady of the Assumption R.C. Church.
St. Botolph's stands on the edge of a large chalk cliff and is visible for some distance across the opposite side.
St. Botolph's National School was opened in 1838, located on the south side of the churchyard, adjoining the chalk pit. An infants school was opened in 1869. A school was operated on the site until 1936.
The cache is hidden along a footpath that runs beside the church. It is located at the start of a very high bridge that spans the pit. You don't have to go far along the bridge if you don't like heights, but I really do recommend the view!
Congratulations to Kentishlass and Crosspath for FTF
