SALÃO
Salão é uma freguesia portuguesa do concelho da Horta, na Ilha do Faial, Região Autónoma dos Açores. Ocupa uma superfíce total de 11,80 km² com 401 habitantes (2011). Possuí uma densidade populacional de 34 hab/km². É constituída pelos lugares de Arrabalde, Barreiro, Canto, Carapeta, Cela, Lomba e Salão. A freguesia conta com 342 eleitores inscritos (Autárquicas 2005). O Salão continua a ser, a freguesia menos povoada da ilha. Tem como principal actividade económica a agro-pecuária.
A IGREJA DE NOSSA SENHORA DO SECORRO
A Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Socorro, construída em 1780, veio substituir uma anterior capela de 1727. O edifício tinha 24,2 metros de comprimento por 10,12 metros de largura, com 1 altar-mor. No ano de 1834, são doados à igreja 3 retábulos dourados que pertenciam ao extinto Convento de São João da Horta, e ainda, o púlpito e o gradeamento do coro, ficando a igreja com 3 altares, sendo os altares laterais, dedicados à N. Sr.ª do Rosário e à N. Sr.ª das Dores. A igreja é totalmente destruída no Sismo de 1998

O SISMO DE 1998
As 5h e 19m (UTC) do dia 9 de Julho de 1998, um sismo com magnitude M=6,1 (1) atingiu a ilha do Faial. Toda a região nordeste sofreu intensa destruição, arrasando quase totalmente as povoações de Espalhafatos e Ribeirinha e, em menor grau. Pedro Miguel, Salão e Cedros. Flamengos e Lombega, apesar de localizadas fora daquela região, sofreram, ainda assim, avultados estragos. Registaram-se nove vítimas mortais (uma das quais por ataque cardíaco) e uma centena de feridos, na grande maioria de gravidade reduzida, em resultado do colapso das habitações.
Um abalo premonitório, sentido pela população do Faial, precedeu em 15 minutos o sismo principal. O foco localizou-se a cerca de 2 km de profundidade e cerca de 10 km a nordeste do Faial (38.634 N-28.523 W; Vales et al.,2001; Matias et al., 2007).
As igrejas, maioritariamente antigas, apresentavam características similares; sofreram, por isso danos equivalentes. A igreja do Salão foi completamente arrasada. As que não ruíram totalmente apresentavam-se praticamente irrecuperáveis ou de recuperação complexa. Ficaram neste estado as igrejas da Ribeirinha, Pedro Miguel, Flamengos e Angústias (esta menos afectada). Outras, de construção mais recente (década de 50 ou 60), como as dos Cedros e da Ribeira Funda, sofreram estragos menos intensos>

It covers an area of 11,80 km2 and has 401 inhabitants (2011) Which gives it a population density of 34 inhabitants per km2. The parishs consists of the neighbourhoods Arrabalde, Barreiro, Canto, Carapeta, Cela, Lomba and Salão. The parish counts 342 registered voters (2005). Salão is the less densily populated parish of the island. Its main economic activity is agriculture and livestock
THE CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF HELP
The Church of Our Lady of Help built in 1780, replaced an earlier chapel of 1727. The building was 24.2 meters long and 10.12 meters wide with one altar. In the year 1834, the church was donated three golden altarpieces belonging to the extinct Convent of Saint John of Horta, as well as the pulpit and the choir railing, leaving the church with three altars, and the side altars, dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary and Our Lady of the Grief. The church was completely destroyed in the earthquake of June 9, 1998.
THE EARHTQUAKE OF 1998
On July 9, 1998, 5pm and 19m (UTC), an earthquake with a magnitude of M = 6.1 hit the island of Faial. The entire northeast region suffered intense destruction, razing almost completely the settlements of Espalhafatos and Ribeirinha and, to a lesser degree, Pedro Miguel, Salão and Cedros. Flamengos and Lombega, although located outside that region, suffered yet substantial damage. There were nine deaths (one from a heart attack) and a hundred wounded, the vast majority only lightly injured, as a result of the collapse of their houses..
A premonitory shock, felt by the population of Faial, preceded the main earthquake 15 minutes . The epicentre was located about 2 km deep and about 10 km northeast of Faial (N38 634 W-28 523; Vales et al., 2001; Matias et al., 2007).
Churches, mostly old, had similar characteristics; They suffered therefore equivalent damage. The church of Salão was completely destroyed. The churches that not fully collapsed remained irrepairable or needed complex recovery. This was the situation of the churches of Ribeirinha, Pedro Miguel, Flamengos and Angústias (this church was less affected). Other, newer buildings (from the 50’s or 60’s), as the churches of Cedros and Ribeira Funda, suffered less severe damage
