Geocache Description:

Walking in the Porto Vecchio (Old Port) it's like to go back to the end of 19th century when the port was living its highest splendor.

Camminando nel Porto Vecchio é come ritornare alla fine del 19' secolo quando il porto stava vivendo il suo periodo di piú grande sviluppo.

Porto Vecchio is different from the other ports in the Mediterranean area because it reproduces, in terms of construction rules and overall layout, the north European port features.
The construction of Porto vecchio, between 1861 and 1898, just after the railway system (1857), was aimed at further developing trade in Trieste through a modern electromechanical facilities.
The design project was the results of a complex work which at that time were the first test of the new reinforced concrete patents as well as new techniques and construction materials.
This area of the city stretching from Barcola to the Canal Grande includes the five original piers, the offshore breakwater built in 1875, the Hydrodynamic power plant (a world's unique example containing all machinery), the electric transformer station and the imposing warehouses which retain the construction patents that were a turning point for late 19th century building techniques.

Il Porto Vecchio è diverso dai porti dell'area mediterranea perchè riproduce, nelle regole costruttive dei suoi edifici e nell'impianto generale, le caratteristiche dei porti del nord-Europa.
La costruzione del Porto Vecchio, avvenuta tra il 1861 e il 1898, subito dopo gli impianti ferroviari (1857), avrebbe potenziato il traffico mercantile di Trieste attraverso efficienti e moderne attrezzature elettromeccaniche. Il progetto fu il risultato di un lavoro complesso, svolto da ingegneri e imprese di costruzioni che vantavano all'epoca la sperimentazione dei nuovi brevetti del cemento armato e nuove tecniche e materiali da costruzione. Quest'area, un pezzo della città, che si estende da Barcola al Canal Grande, comprende ancora oggi i cinque moli originari, la diga foranea realizzata nel 1875, la Centrale idrodinamica (unica al mondo, completa dei suoi macchinari), la sottostazione elettrica di riconversione e i maestosi magazzini che conservano i brevetti costruttivi che hanno caratterizzato la svolta nelle costruzioni della seconda metà dell'Ottocento.
