Hambledon Hill rises imposingly behind the village of Child Okeford on the western edge of the Cranborne Chase. Crowning the top of the hill are the remains of probably the most impressive Iron Age hillfort in Dorset. Owned by the National Trust, it is one of the seven Iron Age Hillforts owned and looked after by them in Dorset.
This Cache is the first of 5 and combines with the caches below to make a circular route around the hillfort. The complete route is a walk of a little over 2 miles (4km), which takes you up over the top of the fort, dropping down to the NE entrance, before returning via the lower ramparts and the Beech Avenue. Although short this is a challenging walk with steep climbs and descents which can be slippery so good footwear is essential.
The suggested starting point is the small lay-by east of Markstone Cottages (N 50’ 54.507 W002’ 13.816) where there is room for 3 or 4 cars. Traffic on this narrow road tends to be fast moving so please take care walking to the track that leads up onto the hill.
Note: The difficulty for each of the caches is on an individual basis. The Terrain takes into account the whole route and all caches involved. In Winter sections of the route can be muddy, especially in gateways. You will need a pen for the micro-caches.
To find this cache leave the lay-by heading west. Pass the cottages and turn right up track / bridle way to the entrance to the hillfort. You are looking for a small clip top box which contains log book, pencil and tradeable goodies.
