Geocache Description:

An easy walk into a vast nature park, this ideal cache for children sits on an overlook offering broad vistas amid the ruins of a once-Grand Hotel.

Located in a 500 acre nature preserve owned by the Town of Lenox, this cache is in an area laced with cross-country ski trails, hiking trails, lakes, a gazebo, and natural attractions.
Not far from the center of Town, it can be entered from a number of locations.
Descriptions and often maps can be found at the entrances, or see Charles W.G. Smith’s “Nature Walks in the Berkshire hills” (Boston, MA: Appalachian Mountain Club, 1997)
The cache is located among the ruins of the Aspinwall Hotel. Opened in 1902, this hilltop resort with its broad lawns and spectacular vistas quickly became the Grand Hotel of the Berkshires. With 400 rooms, each with its own fireplace, the Aspenwall had a resident orchestra, vast infrastructure including a telephone system, and extensive outbuildings.

The remains of the complex, destroyed by fire and abandoned during the Depression, can still be found throughout much of the Park; and the length of the ridge on which the cache can be found remains dotted with ruins.

This cache was adopted by gworol on 5/27/09.

Moved cache to prevent damage to the old rock foundation on 11/21/09.
