Geocache Description:

Mnogi plemiški dobrotniki so v naslednjih stoletjih samostan bogato obdarili, veliko škode pa so mu v vsakem pogledu povzročili turški vpadi, zlasti v drugi polovici 15. stoletja.

In 1132 began the construction of Stična Abbey, the oldest monastery in the narrower Slovene lands, sheltered by the hills of the Dolenjska region. Its actual and legal foundation was directed by Peregrin, Patriarch of Aquileia, as an able bishop, whose influence reached as far as Burgundy, the mother province of the Cistercian order, from where the first monks came to Stična, along with its French builder, Michael.

Many aristocratic benefactors gave rich donations to the monastery in the centuries that followed; however, Turkish invasions caused great damage to it, especially in the second half of the 15th century. The monastery flourished in the 17th century, until the Hapsburg Emperor Joseph II disbanded it. Following a renovation at the end of the 19th century, regular monastic life began anew. For centuries, the monastery had an important impact on the religious and cultural life of the region. Today, the Cistercian monastery houses a smaller monastic community and the Slovene Museum of Christianity with its permanent and temporary exhibitions. The monastery is one of the biggest cultural and sacral monuments in Slovenia. Until the reforms introduced by Emperor Joseph II, the monastery's library kept the valuable illuminated Stična manuscripts, written in Latin and dating from the 12th and 13th century. In 1428, the Stična Manuscript was created in Stična; it is one of the first written texts in the Slovene language and as such is important for Slovene linguistics. The monastery is famous for the cloister in its central area, which is still considered one of the most beautiful Gothic cloisters in Slovenia. According to some sources, the monastery complex contains the longest basilica in Slovenia, the Basilica of the Sorrowful Mother of God.

Tied to the monastery is the story of the Duchess Virida Visconti, who was a great benefactress of the monastery, the mother of Ernest the Iron, the last Duke of Carinthia, who was enthroned on 18 March 1414 according to the traditional rite in Carinthia, and the grandmother of Frederick III, who became the King of Germany and the Holy Roman Emperor. Virida Visconti came to Pristava nad Stično after the death of her husband, the Habsburg Duke Leopold III, who had ruled over most of our land.

In order to calculate the location of the treasure you must visit the Slovene Museum of Christianity, the monastic church in the monastery complex and the Church of St Lambert in Pristava.
