History of Lee Methodist Church

This was the first permanent church to built (the Anglican was using a temporary site) therefore making this the oldest church in Lee on Solent.

In 1897 William James Pyle founded the methodist church on the site and building was completed later that year. He had moved to Fareham in the summer of 1858, establishing a business as a baker and confectioner in West Street. He became a prominent member of the local methodist church and was appointed as the Sunday School Secretary or Superintendant, a postwhich he held for many years. A much respected figure in the community, he later retired to Lee on Solent where he lived with his second wife Ellen, whom he had married in 1885. She too, although deaf, was an active member of the church, having been a founder member of the Sunday School in Fareham in 1859. She came from a devoutly religous Fareham family and her brother, William Randall Cremer (interestingly, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1903) had also been a Sunday School teacher before he moved to London. William and Ellen Pyle did much to ensure the efficient running and establisment of the new church in Lee up until their deaths, Ellen aged 82 in 1920 and William aged 90 in 1926.

In the 1930's further building work was carried out on the High Street elevation to form a small church hall and these were extended later in 1957 making a popular venue for groups and coffee mornings.
