Geocache Description:

Church Micro 8451...Coundon

A small church, dedicated to St. James, was built on the roadside at Coundon in 1841, along with a parsonage and a National School. The Coundon area was until 1842 part of the ecclesiastical parish of St. Andrew’s Auckland.

The church was rebuilt in 1872 on a new site set further back from the road from the original, and on a much grander in scale, the accommodation being increased from 400 to 530 sittings. Again dedicated to St. James, it was designed by the leading architect Ewan Christian, and is an imposing stone building in the Early English style with lancet windows, large and with an apsidal east end.

St. James' Church Coundon is a small friendly church in the Anglo Catholic tradition. They celebrate all the major feasts and festivals.

The church contains the famous "Learning Porch" - a unique project housed within the building for heritage, cultural, educational and social use for people of all ages. It's an open, child friendly church and a warm welcome awaits you.

They also offer you a heritage experience and a wildlife trail.
