L'obelisco Flaminio è uno dei tredici obelischi antichi di Roma, situato in piazza del Popolo.
Ha una altezza di 24 metri, e con il basamento e la croce raggiunge i 36.50 m.
Fu realizzato all'epoca dei faraoni Ramesse II e Seti I (XIII secolo a.C.) e collocato nel tempio del Sole di Eliopoli in Egitto; venne portato per volere di Ottaviano Augusto a Roma nel 10 a.C. insieme all'obelisco di Montecitorio, e collocato sulla spina del Circo Massimo, seguito tre secoli più tardi dall'obelisco Lateranense.
L'iscrizione sull'obelisco
Fu ritrovato nel 1587 rotto in tre pezzi insieme all'obelisco Lateranense, ed eretto per ordine di papa Sisto V ad opera di Domenico Fontana nel 1589.
Nel 1823 Giuseppe Valadier lo ornò di una base con quattro vasche circolari e altrettanti leoni in pietra, di stile egizio.
Il granito è una delle rocce più abbondanti sulla superficie terrestre; si tratta di una roccia ignea intrusiva felsica, con grana che va da media a grossolana e occasionalmente può presentare megacristalli. Il suo nome deriva dal latino granum (a grani), con chiaro riferimento alla sua struttura olocristallina.
Il granito è classificato tramite il diagramma QAPF, nel quale si colloca nel campo delle rocce sovrassature, ossia con contenuti di quarzo compresi tra il 20 e il 60%. Gli altri minerali fondamentali presenti sono i feldspati (ortoclasio, sanidino e microclino) e il plagioclasio (con composizioni più albitiche) e miche (biotite e in alcuni tipi di granito muscovite). Se il plagioclasio è quasi interamente albite il granito prende il nome di granito sodico, se nella roccia è presente anche pirosseno rombico la roccia prende il nome di granito charnockitico. Un'ulteriore varietà di granito sono i leucograniti, nei quali i minerali mafici sono estremamente ridotti. La densità media del granito è di 2,75 g/cm3 con un range che va da 1,74 g/cm3 a 2,80 g/cm3.

The Flaminio Obelisk (Italian: Obelisco Flaminio) is one of the thirteen ancient obelisks in Rome, Italy. It is located in the Piazza del Popolo.
It is 24 m (67 ft) high and with the base and the cross reaches 36.50 m (100 ft).
It was built during the kingdom of Pharaohs Ramesses II and Merneptah (13th century BC) and placed in the Temple of Sun in Heliopolis; it was brought to Rome in 10 BC by command of Augustus, together with the Obelisk of Montecitorio, and placed on the spina of the Circus Maximus, followed three centuries later by the Lateran Obelisk.
The obelisk was discovered in 1587, broken into three pieces, together with the Lateran Obelisk; and it was erected in the Piazza del Popolo by Domenico Fontana in 1589, at the command Pope Sixtus V.
In 1823 Giuseppe Valadier embellished it with a base having four circular basins and stone lions, imitating the Egyptian style.
