Cette petite promenade dans Calais-Nord vous permettra de vous arrêter devant certains panneaux de la ville et regarder autour de vous quelques endroits intéresssants. This short tour in Northern-Calais will let you stop before a few signposts in the city and discover some places of interest.
La ville de Calais est, depuis 1885, la réunion de l'ancienne ville de St-Pierre, cité industrielle, et de Courghain, nom de Calais d'origine, cité de pêcheurs. Lors de la 1ère guerre mondiale, Calais fut la première ville française à subir une attaque de Dirigeables. Divers raids de Zeppelin ZX détruisirent certains quartiers, et entre autres les vitraux de l'église Notre-Dame. Durant la 2ème guerre mondiale, Calais fut assiégée du 22 au 26 mai 1940. Après l'invasion de la France par les Forces Allemandes, la région fut administrativement rattachée par le Reich à la Belgique. A la fin de la guerre, craignant un débarquement des Forces Alliées, les Autorités Allemandes instaurèrent une zone interdite autour du port. A la suite de la conquête allemande, et de la reconquête canadienne, la ville fut détruite à 73%. Après la guerre, les quartiers détruits au nord de la ville furent reconstruits malgré l'absence de fonds spécifiques de reconstruction (contrairement à d'autres villes comme Dunkerque), ce qui engendra une reconstruction d'urgence, et marquera l'architecture urbaine de la ville pour de nombreuses années.// The city of Calais has been since 1885 the result of the union of the old industrial city of Saint-Pierre,with the original city of Calais-Courghain, a city of fishermen. In World War I, Calais was the first French city to suffer from an attack of Zeppelin ZX airships which destroyed several districts as well as the stained-glass windows of Notre-Dame Church. In World War II, Calais was besieged from 22nd to 26th May 1940. After the invasion of France by the German Forces, the region was linked with Belgium as far as the administration was concerned. At the end of the war, for fear of a landing by the Allied Forces nearby, the German Authorities set up a prohibited zone around the port. Following the German take-over and the Canadian re-conquest, the city was 73% destroyed. After the war, all districts destroyed in the Northern part of the city were rebuilt in spite of the lack of specific funds for reconstruction (contrary to other cities, such as Dunkerque), which brought about an emergency reconstruction and therefore marked the urban architecture for years.
