Hallsberg byggdes från början upp runt järnvägen. Efter några år började samhället växa och mer mark behövde tas i anspråk för bostäder, skolor och annan infrastruktur. Detta medförde att man byggde på gammal sjöbotten och måste ta med i beräkningen att vatten behövde avledas på konstgjord väg från området. Under årens lopp har detta lösts med hjälp av olika tekniker, bl a pumpning och dikning. Ett annat behov för ett växande samhälle är att ta hand om och rena dagvattnet. I slutet av 1990-talet påbörjades därför ett vattenvårdsprojekt som resulterade i området Ekoparken.
Ekoparken är anlagd kring ett grävt kanalsystem med små konstgjorda sjöar och det innehåller en mängd promenadstråk med flera broar. Det har blivit ett populärt utflyktsområde med ett rikt djurliv mitt i samhället. Kanske kommer du att kunna se bäver, sångsvanar och andra fåglar lite beroende på årstid.

Hallsberg was built around the railroad. After a few years the community began to grow and more land was needed to be utilized for housing, schools and other infrastructure. As this new land was based on former lake bed, one had to take into account that water had to be diverted artificially from the area. Over the years this has been solved with different draining and pumping technologies. The need to get rid of storm water as well as taking care of and cleaning it, has grown in pace with the growth of the society. In the late 1990’s a water treatment project was started, and it resulted in a “sustainability park” that is called Ekoparken.
The park “Ekoparken” is landscaped around a digged canal system with small artificial lakes and it holds several footpaths and bridges. It is a popular excursion area with a rich wildlife in the middle of the city. Perhaps you will be able to see beavers, whooper swans and other birds depending on the season.
