Twelve Oaks Plantation is nestled among magnificent oak trees in the heart of Cajun Country. The home sits on a 750-acre working sugar can plantation and overlooks Big Bayou Black in Terrebonne Parish. Twelve Oaks's land was given as a grant from the Spanish to the Martin Family in the 1800's. Shortly after, the plantation building was built and became part of the Mandalay Plantation which was the grounds of Houma Sugars Inc. - a large sugarcane plant and sugar manufacturer. The original building later became part of the Southdown Plantation. In 1930, the entire plant was converted to electric power to adapt to newer technology. However, six years later in 1936, the sugarcane plant was burnt to the ground and the grounds was resurrected fourteen years later. The land was purchased by the Newman family who built the existing home in 1950. Fred Newman hired an architect to design the home and drew inspiration from a Community Coffee package. Today, Twelve Oaks Plantation is a full service bed and breakfast owned and operated by the Cenac Family.
