Muinainen kauppa- ja kulkureitti
Iijärven Maaselänlahden rantautumispaikka sijaitsee ikivanhan kauppa- ja kulkureitin varrella. Maaselänlahdelta vei muinoin kapuloitu 1½ km pitkä veneiden vetoreitti Vanttajajärvelle ja sieltä aukeni reitti Pistojoen kautta Jäämerelle saakka. Maaselänlahden ja Vanttajajärven erottava kannas on samalla vedenjakaja - Iijärvestä vedet virtaavat kohti länttä aina Pohjanlahteen, Vanttajajärvestä ne kulkevat kohti itää ja Jäämerta. Kulkijoita täällä riitti jo kauan sitten, reittihän yhdisti toisiinsa Pohjanlahden ja Jäämeren vilkkaat asutukset.
Lähistön nähtävyyksistä vaikuttavin on Iivaara, Etelä-Kuusamon korkein (470m) luonnontilainen vaara. Iivaara määrättiin v. 1595 Täyssinän rauhassa Suomen ja Venäjän väliseksi rajatunturiksi. Sen läheisyydessä on laavuja ja autiotupa Iirinki -nimisen patikointireitin varrella.
Tukinsiirtolaitteet Vanttajankannaksella
Ab Uleå Oy rakennutti v. 1922-23 Kuusamosta lähtevän uiton nopeuttamiseksi höyrykoneiden voimalla toimivan kaksiosaisen siirtoradan , jonka kumpikin osa oli 1½ km pitkä, Kuusamojärven ja Iijärven välille. Ab Uleå Oy käytti laitosta v. 1923-29 ja siirsi Iijoen puolelle lähes 630.000 tukkia.
V. 1935-36 Metsähallitus rakensi lastauspaikan Kuusamojärven Lahtelaan Järveen rakennettiin puoliympyrän muotoinen tie. Samanlainen rakennettiin tänne purkupaikalle Iijärven Maaselänlahteen.
Tukit lastattiin kolmella tukkikiramolla kuorma-autoihin ja kuljetettiin yhtiön tekemää tietä (nykyinen Hiltusentie) pitkin purkupaikalle. Kiramot toimivat polttomoottoreilla. Siirtotietä ehdittiin käyttää ainoastaan v. 1941-42. Sodan päätyttyä vetäytyvät saksalaiset tuhosivat kaikki laitteet sekä tien.
An ancient trade- and travel route
The landing site of the Maaselänlahti Bay in the Lake Iijärvi is situated along the ancient trade and travel route. In ancient times there was a 1½ km long courseway for rowing boats from Maaselänlahti Bay to Lake Vanttajajärvi. From there opened up a route through River Pistojoki all the way to the Arctic Ocean. Isthmus that separates Maaselänlahti Bay from the lake Vanttajajärvi also serves as a divide. Water from the Lake Iijärvi flows towards the west all the way to the Gulf of Bothnia. From the Lake Vanttajajärvi they flow towards the east and the Arctic Ocean. In ancient time there were plenty of people on the move, because this water route connected busy settlements of the Arctic Ocean and the Gulf of Bothnia to each other.
From the nearby attractions the most impressive is the Iivaara Fell, the highest (470 m) fell in Southern Kuusamo is still in its natural state. Iivaara was declared as a border fell between Finland and Russia in the peace treaty of Täyssinä in 1595. In the vicinity of Iivaara there are lean-tos and a wilderness cabin along the hiking route Iirinki.
Log conveying equipment at Vanttajankannas
In 1922-23, for speeding up the log floating from Kuusamo, the Company Ab Uleå Oy constructed a two part conveying track with steam engines, each part being app.1½ km long. The company used the plant during the years 1923-29 to convey almost 630.00 logs to the River Iijoki.
In 1935-36, The National Board of Forestry constructed a loading point at Lahtela on Lake Kuusamojärvi. A semi-circular road was built by the lake with similar one to the unloading point here at Maaselänlahti by Lake Iijärvi.
The logs were loaded with three log ramps to lorries and transported alog the companybuilt road (present Hiltusentie) to the unloading point. Log hoists worked with internal combustion engines. The transport road was only used during the years 1941-42. At the end of the war, during their retreat, the Germans burned and destroyed the road and the equipment.
