Sandstone Pillars of Zhangjiajie

Development of the Sandstone
380 million years ago, in the geologic period of Devonian, Zhangjiajie was situated at a wide coastal area near the upper Yangtze Sea. Plenty of quartz sandstone debris, carried by water flowing from the surrounding lands, were deposited here and formed the sandstone strata that are over 500m thick. The substantial foundation of the sandstone forest landscape was formed.

Formation of the Pillars and Peaks
Since the Jurassic Period (180 million years ago) the sandstone strata underwent a serial of tectonic movements that caused the fracture and deformation of the sandstone. The area was uplifted intermittent. Many inside fractures and joints in the sandstone were formed in the hundreds of squarekilometer big sandstone area.
In the meanwhile water flew along the joints and divided the huge rock into a lot of large square hills. Also wind and weather eroded the rock. Grooves and valleys, with lateral stone walls and ridges, were formed along the large joints. Stone Peak clusters, several peaks that are still connected to each other at the base, were formed by flowing water cutting along joints in the stone wall and ridges.

Once again the stone peak clusters were cut and eroded and evolved into individual stone columns - finally the stone pillar forest had been formed.

But even today the development of the Sandstone Pillar Forest goes on since erosion continues in Zhangjiajie. At some places in the national park you will still see the earlier stages of the formation - the stone peak clusters.

The coordinates lead you to the overlook named "Grand Sightseeing Platform" (Chinese name: 大观台 - dà guan tái). From here you can have one of the most amazing views in the park, including the highest point of the area, the 1.200m high 'Tianzi Peak' or 'Emperor Peak'.

To claim this Earthcache you have to answer the following questions and send me your solutions:
1. Look around: What kind of rock can you see? What is its color?
2. Is this rock metamorphic, igneous or sedimentary?
3. Take a look at the near information board: According to the board, which phenomena of strata tell the history of the earth? Name three.

Pictures of you at the platform or in the park would be great :)

If you have time, I can just recommend to follow down the steps nearby the platform. This way leads you to a few more interesting places: one is the Celestial Bridge, the other one is the Cock Pecking. If you don't have enough time to do it, never mind, because everywhere in the park you will surely see some beautiful parts of nature.

Enjoy your trip to Zhangjiajie!
