The church of St. Stephen, erected in 1830, and enlarged by the addition of a chancel in 1872, is a building of stone in the Lancet style, consisting of chancel, nave, and a tower containing 8 bells, the gift of the late Thomas Varley esq., of Edgerton House. There is a memorial tablet to the Rev. Jesse Bellamy and his widow, erected in 1858 by the congregation and friends. The stained east window was erected by Henry Beaumont Taylor esq., in memory of his son, John Henry Taylor, and there are eight other stained windows. The interior affords 700 sittings. The register dates from the year 1831. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £380, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Huddersfield and held since 1899 by the Rev. Arthur Herbert Wentworth Ridsdale M.A., of St. John's College, Cambridge.
