Les caractéristiques karstiques de la géologie présente à travers le bassin versant de la Nation Sud sont le résultat de couches de calcaire formées des millions d'années auparavant par la mer de Champlain, créant de nombreuses sources d'eau dans toute la région.
Historiquement, ces sources ont attiré les résidents et visiteurs qui cherchaient à profiter des eaux contribuant à leur bien-être. Le développement et la mise en place de spas étaient les premières formes de tourisme.
Carlsbad Springs, Caledonia Springs et, bien sûr, Winchester Springs étaient des destinations de détente pour les clients venus d'un peu partout. Une publicité de l'époque pour les sources de Winchester Springs annonçait : « Les eaux de ces sources sont inégalées dans toute l'Amérique du Nord, et de par l'immense réputation qu'elles ont maintenant, il serait inutile de les exalter davantage.»

The geology of the South Nation jurisdiction is often comprised of limestone, resulting in quite a few “springs” in the area. Although these were originally used as a clean and safe source of drinking water, over the years many springs were marketed to “aid in the well being” of clients who had come to “take the waters”. These types of spas were an early type of tourism for the area and they were very successful. Clients came from far and wide to retreat to Carlsbad Springs, Caledonia Springs and of course Winchester Springs. Around 1870 a combined hotel and health care facility was successfully erected and operated for about 35 years. Sir John A Macdonald once addressed a crowd from the balcony. As an advertisement of the day for The Winchester Springs heralded “The waters of these Springs are unsurpassed in all of North America, and from the wide reputation they now have, it will be needless to extol them further.” These healing waters were supposed to cure Rheumatism, Dyspepsia, bilious derangements, urinary obstructions and skin diseases of all kinds. The waters contained sulphur, iron, bromides, and potassium.The nearby railway line added to success these health spas shared before they started to fade from favour in the post depression era. The last of the grand hotels at Carlsbad spring closed in the late 1960’s.
