There has been a church on this site since 1831 but the current building dates from 1970. Following a huge influx of new residents to Waterlooville in the 1950s, the decision to build a larger and more modern church here was taken in the early 1960s and the iconic 60s's design was chosen from architect, Kenneth Makins. It was a time when concrete was new and exciting and it seemed anything was possible. The stark lines, wing-shaped tower roof and pre-formed pebble dash, slab cladding are typical of the period. While the outside may seem dated and even drab by today's standards, the resulting interior is a bright and open space surrounded by stained glass windows. The windows themselves were influenced by modern art of the time, made famous by Piet Mondrian and known as neoplasticism.

Stepping through the arch in to the grounds, you'll notice no graves obvious among the lawns but you can see the headstones stacked around the perimeter; a legacy from the previous building. The stones have been lined up this way since the new building was first 're-hallowed' in 1970 and the open grounds have become something of a green-space haven for the town. To protect the rear of the building and add some security for the otherwise concealed entrances, a fence was later erected - but rather unusually, you can see that they decided not to move one of the stones which was in the way.
