La sienite è una roccia magmatica intrusiva che fa parte del plutone della Valle Cervo (o plutone della Balma), corpo di rocce magmatico che si è formato 30 milioni di anni fa, durante l'Oligocene, e che è connesso alla collisione tra le placche terrestri Europea e Africana che ha generato la catena alpina.
Il plutone della Valle Cervo presenta una caratteristica struttura ad anelli subconcentrici, per intrusioni successive, con un nucleo granitico (avente il centro in prossimità di Campiglia Cervo), una fascia mediana di sienite e un anello esterno di monzonite.
La sienite è una roccia rara, presente in piccole masse nella Foresta Nera e in Sassonia in Germania, nella regione di Oslo in Norvegia e nei monti Adirondack nello stato di New York negli Stati Uniti d'America.
La sienite per la sua composizione viene fatta rientrare nelle granodioriti. Alla vista, si presenta come una roccia chiara grigia, rosata o violacea con struttura massiccia debolmente anisotropa, omeogranulare a grana media.
Il suo contenuto di silico-titanato di calce con cristalli cuneiformi rende la sienite uno dei migliori materiali da costruzione, caratterizzata da una elevata resistenza al calpestio. Infatti, è stata impiegata per la realizzazione di pavimentazioni stradali (cubettature, pavè), ma anche manufatti di pregio architettonico ed edifici.
La sienite è stata estratta dalla Cava della Balma sin dagli anni 1830, questa era la cava principale della Valle Cervo. In precedenza, veniva lavorata soltanto la pietra proveniente dagli affioramenti superficiali. La cava era chiamata Antica e Quarona e fu definitivamente chiusa nel 1980 quando si decise di far brillare una mina che recò danni alle case degli abitati vicini, oltre che al ponte sul Torrente Cervo e alla viabilità circostante. La rimozione dell'ingente quantità di detriti prodotta durò fino alla fine degli anni 1990.
Nel luglio del 2009, il Comune di San Paolo Cervo ha inaugurato il Parco delle Cave che comprende una palestra di roccia con cinque vie d'arrampicata sportiva (con difficolta da 4a, 4b, 4c, 5a e 5b) e due vie ferrate, un'area picnic, un punto ristoro, una zona attrezzata per la sosta dei cavalli e tre sentieri panoramici.

The syenite is an intrusive igneous rock that is part of the pluton of the Valle Cervo (or pluton of the Balma), body of magmatic rocks that formed 30 million years ago during the Oligocene, and that is connected to the collision of the European and the African plates generating the Alps.
The pluton of the Valle Cervo has a characteristic concentric ring structure, for subsequent intrusions, with a granitic nucleus (its center is near Campiglia Cervo), a middle band of syenite and an outer ring of monzonite.
The syenite is a rare rock, present in small masses in the Black Forest and in Saxony in Germany, in the Oslo region in Norway and in the Adirondack Mountains in the United States of America.
The syenite for its composition is categorised as granodiorite. At the sight, it looks like a rock gray, pink or purple with massive structure weakly anisotropic homogranular medium grain.
Its content of cuneiform silico-titanate crystals of lime makes the syenite one of the best construction materials, characterized by a high resistance to wear. In fact, it has been employed for the construction of road surfaces (e.g. pavet), but also artifacts of architectural value and buildings.
The syenite was extracted from the Cava della Balma (quarry of the Balma) since the 1830s, this was the main quarry of Valle Cervo. Previously, only the stone was worked from the surface outcrops. The quarry was called Antica and Quarona, and was finally closed in 1980 when it was decided to shine a mine that went damage to the houses of the neighboring towns, as well as the bridge over Torrente Cervo and the surrounding roads. Removing the vast amount of debris produced lasted until the late 1990s.
In July 2009, the village of San Paolo Cervo inaugurated a park (Parco delle Cave) which includes a rock-climbing part with five routes climbing (difficulties 4a, 4b, 4c, 5a and 5b) and two climbing routes, a picnic area, a food court, an area equipped for resting horses and three trekking trails.
