O estranho nome Despe-te-que-suas é atribuído à ribeira ali existente. Por ser uma zona de acentuado declive, obrigava a um grande esforço físico a pé ou em carroças puxadas por animais.
The strange name of this belvedere can be translated into something like: “take your clothes off, otherwise you will sweat”. The name comes from the stream, which required a great physical effort on foot or in carts pulled by animals.
A ponte "Despe-te Que Suas", concluída no final de 2011, tornou-se por um breve período o vão de maior altura em Portugal (159 m), antes da ponte sobre o rio Corgo, perto de Vila Real, em Portugal continental, que a superou em 2012, com 230 m de altura sobre o rio Corgo.
O principal vão tem 185 metros de comprimento, a mais longo em Portugal.
O desfiladeiro profundo é um dos muitos na ilha de São Miguel.
Conhecida como a rodovia Scut dos Açores, o projeto exigiu a construção de 27 pontes em 60 quilómetros de novas estradas de que a ponte Despe-te Que SUAS é a maior delas.
Com apenas 385 metros de comprimento total, tem uma disposição assimétrica com vãos laterais de 105 m e 95 m, flanqueando um grande vão central de 185 metros. Os suportes têm respectivamente 92 m e 66 m de altura, acima das encostas íngremes de um exuberante desfiladeiro do rio.
Também na mesma Scut, vários quilómetros a oeste existe a ponte Achadinha / Achada, com uma altura de cerca 100 metros.
The bridge "Despe-te que suas", completed in late 2011, briefly became Portugal's highest span (159 m), before the bridge over the Corgo river, near Vila Real, on continental Portugal, surpassed it in 2012, with 230 m over the river Corgo.
The main span of 185 meters is now the longest in Portugal. The deep gorge is one of many on the island of São Miguel.
Known as the Scut Azores highway, the project required no less than 27 bridges on 60 kilometres of new roads of which Despe-te que suas’ Bridge is the largest bridge.
Despe-te que suas's relatively short overall length of 385 meters has an asymmetrical layout with side spans of 344 feet (105 m) and 312 feet (95 m) flanking a large central span of 607 feet (185 meters). The bridge is supported on 302 foot (92 m) and 217 foot (66 m) piers that rise from their perch above the steep slopes of a lush, tree-filled river gorge.
Also on the Scut highway, several kilometres to the west there is the Achadinha / Achada Bridge, with a height in the 100 meter range.
