Era probablemente uno de los edificios más majestuosos de la ciudad romana de Emerita Augusta. A pesar de su nombre, el templo estaba dedicado al culto a Roma y al emperadores. Este templo del siglo I pertenece al conjunto arqueológico romano de Mérida, declarado patrimonio histórico por la UNESCO.
Tiene una planta rectangular, rodeado de columnas (períptero) y un hexástilo (con seis columnas en el frente). Los capiteles de las columnas son de Corinto, con un eje acanalado y hechos de granito. Junto al templo existía, probablemente, un jardín con un estanque en la época romana.
It was probably one of the most majestic buildings in Roman Emerita Augusta. Despite its name, the temple was dedicated to the cult of Rome and the emperors. This temple of the 1st century belongs to Mérida’s Roman archaeological site and has the UNESCO World Heritage designation.
It has a rectangular floor plan, surrounded by columns (peripteros) and a hexastyle (with six columns at the front). The column capitals are Corinthian, with a ribbed shaft and made of granite. Next to the temple there was probably a garden with a pond in Roman times.
