Kun aloitin kätköilyn, ei älypuhelimia vielä ollut markkinoilla. Puhelimella kätköily oli muutenkin harvinaista herkkua, koska puhelimissa harvoin oli GPS, eikä kiinteätä mobiilidataa ollut tarjolla. Dataliikenne oli kallista. Toista se on nykyään, kun on liuta appseja, joista voi valita mieleisensä. Ennen oli siis kunnollista vai oliko sittenkään?
Vuonna 2005 sain käsiini Nokian hienon Linux-pohjaisen Internet Tabletin eli N770:n. Kavereiden kesken tämä tunnettiin nimellä jääskrapa, koska juuri muuta käyttöä laitteelle ei keksinyt. Eikä se ollut hyvä jääskrapanakaan. Kosketusnäyttöäkin piti käyttää styluksella ja sitä muuten sai painaa lujaa jos halusi, että painallus rekisteröityi. Jossain vaiheessa sitten keksin hankkia Bluetooth GPS -palikan ja siitä alkoi geokätköily jääskrapan avulla. Myöhemmin sitten tulin järkiini ja hankin käsi-GPS -laitteen.

When I started geocaching there was no smartphones available in the market. It was quite rare that someone would go geocaching with a mobile phone as mobile phones didn't have GPS chips and there was no flat rate for mobile data. Mobile data was rather expensive. The situation is quite different nowadays and there is a plethora of apps available to choose from. Those were the days or were they?
In 2005, I got nice Linux-based Nokia Internet Tablet - N770. It was also known as ice scraper as there was not much other use for the device. Well, it wasn't particularly good in ice scraping either. Touch screen had to be used with a stylus and you really had to press the screen hard to get the device to register the press. At some point I acquired Bluetooth GPS and I started geocaching with this ice scraper. Later on I bought real handheld GPS device.
